Habits, the seemingly small decisions we make daily, hold the power to shape our lives in profound ways. In 2020, as the world grappled with unprecedented challenges, many of us found solace and resilience through the cultivation of positive habits. As a Music Director, I embarked on a transformative journey inspired by the principles outlined in James Clear’s “Atomic Habits.”
The Initial Struggle:
When the world came to a standstill, and we were confined to our homes, the initial hope was for a swift return to normalcy. However, as time passed, the reality set in – the freedom to go about our lives as we pleased was slipping away. In the face of this, coping mechanisms became essential.
The Catalyst: “Atomic Habits” by James Clear:
Motivated by a desire for change, I turned to James Clear’s insightful book, “Atomic Habits.” The concept of starting small and gradually building momentum resonated with me. I applied this principle to my exercise routine, beginning with short, manageable sessions that I committed to over a 30-day period.
The Power of Incremental Progress:
The journey began with modest goals, but the impact was profound. By consistently increasing the duration and intensity of my exercises, I achieved a remarkable milestone – 365 days of yoga. This experience taught me a valuable lesson: rather than fixating on grand goals, focusing on small, attainable objectives can lead to sustainable success.
Applying Habits to Music Practice:
Translating this lesson to my role as a Music Director, I recognized the parallel challenges musicians face in committing to daily practice. I started advising my students to set achievable goals and engage in short practice sessions of 10 to 15 minutes with a small, doable goal in each session. Working in small sections, playing, and paying attention to the details on the page, repeating slowly until the parts were beautifully played. The results were remarkable, with many students finding success in this approach.
A Second Year of Commitment:
Buoyed by the success of my personal journey and the positive impact on my students, I embarked on a second year of 365 days of yoga. This commitment not only reinforced the power of habits but also highlighted the importance of perseverance and discipline in any creative endeavor.
Conclusion:
In the realm of music and personal development, the philosophy of small, consistent habits has proven to be a guiding force. As we navigate the complexities of our craft, embracing incremental progress and setting achievable goals can lead to lasting success. Let us harmonize our habits, both in life and in music, to create a symphony of growth and fulfillment.
